The States-General of Italian organic production system were initiated and financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Organized by INEA in 2009 and first half of 2010, they were marked out by a series of initiatives in which farmers, consumers and other representatives of civil society discussed the main issues and identify possible solutions. The ideas and suggestions of non-governmental actors were then brought to the attention of policy makers and public and private institutions to encourage the growth of Italian organic system.

Congresses and thematic groups worked at the same time along connected paths. The Congress opening, held on April 14, 2009 in Padova, allowed an initial comparison between the players of the organic system. It was useful for outlining scenarios and to point out general instances. With parallel thematic groups and with regional congress, the issues highlighted in the opening phase was studied to define sustainable development paths for the organic agro-food sector.

During the closing conference, held in Abano Terme (PD) on December, 10 and 11, 2009, the project results were discussed (development strategies and concrete actions) and the "Manifesto of the Italian organic" was presented in which the main proposals and recommendations aimed at developing national organic farming were introduced.

States General have also provided an opportunity for further discussion on the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of introducing a national logo for organic products in Italy. For comparative purposes, the logo adopted in some EU countries were examined, having study the characteristics and contexts of application for verification of transferability in the national context. Furthermore, a survey was executed to know the views of consumers and farmers that represent the main potential beneficiaries of national organic label.

A special focus was developed about the new regulation for organic farming (Regulation (EC) No 834/2007) stimulating the comparison among operators and experts about its threats and opportunities through a specific Forum.
